Frequently Ask Question (FAQ)

What is The Hult Global Case Challenge?

The Hult Global Case Challenge is the world’s largest international case competition. The annual event brings together the brightest college and university students from around the globe to help solve one of the world’s key social challenges in partnership with sector leading NGOs. Hult GCC is a proud partner of the Clinton Global Initiative, an organization created by President Bill Clinton to turn ideas into action.

The Hult GCC is held simultaneously across all of the Hult International Business School’s campuses, Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai, ensuring the involvement of colleges and universities from around the world. As a result, the event pulls together a diverse array of skill sets and nationalities to develop unique and innovative implementation solutions to overcome the issues faced.

How can college and university students help with a social challenge?

Many non-profit organizations struggle to make a telling contribution despite having a potentially powerful solution to a problem. Not because they lack commitment or funding, but because they face execution hurdles that can only be solved by leveraging a wide range of skill-sets and an on-the-ground understanding of the situation. Few non-profit organizations have the necessary knowledge and skills in-house.
Overcoming execution hurdles is what colleges and universities teach their students, specifically business schools, since the ability to execute is critical in business. Furthermore, business schools are home to a wide variety of students from different industries and countries that collectively have a very broad knowledge base. Harnessing this resource through crowd-sourcing innovative ideas and solutions is a technique that could significantly help any international organization.

Who is Hult?

Hult International Business School (formerly the Arthur D. Little School of Management) is a global business school with campuses in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai. It is named after one of Europe’s leading entrepreneurs Bertil Hult who founded EF Education First, the largest private education company in the world. Hult is ranked in the top 20 business schools in the United States and in the top 100 in the world. Today it has over 1,300 students enrolled across its campuses, from nearly 100 different countries.

Why is Hult doing this?

The recent financial crisis has taught us the importance of practicing sound business ethics. The Hult Global Case Challenge is dedicated to teaching business school students from around the world that the skills they learn can be applied for-good as well as for-profit.
Hult is a natural home for such a competition. Not simply because it has a global campus network that can very effectively bring together students from all over the world, but also because many of the 96 countries that Hult students hail from face global challenges in the areas of energy, finance, hunger, disease and education; challenges that require solutions which are broad in scope, yet detailed in implementation.

How was the Global Case Challenge created?

The Hult Global Case Challenge is the brainchild of Ahmad Ashkar, a Hult alumnus who developed the concept whilst still a student. Ahmad had the idea after seeing Charles Kane, the CEO of One Laptop Per Child, describe some of the challenges his organization faced during a speech at Hult.

Why the Clinton Global Initiative?

The Clinton Global Initiative is an ideal partner for the Hult Global Case Challenge because it is dedicated to turning ideas into actions. The Clinton Global Initiative has over 2,000 members from the realms of government, private industry and non-profit organizations. All of these members have made a Commitment to Action to help solve a pressing global issue. Notable CGI corporate members include Goldman Sachs, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Intel, Virgin, General Electric, Wal-Mart, Berkshire Hathaway, News Corporation, and ExxonMobil.

What challenge will students tackle?

Students will be asked to develop solutions to a real issue faced by a member of the Clinton Global Initiative in delivering their Commitment to Action. The chosen partner organization is announced at the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting each September. A business case covering detailed background information on the chosen partner organization and their Commitment to Action will be released to all selected teams prior to the competition itself along with a specific challenge that students will be asked to solve. However, a specific target and metric will be released only at the Regional Final.

Why give US$1million?

Hult is dedicated to practical business education and making a difference in the world. The US$1million is designed to (a) help the brightest business students focus on developing ideas that can be feasibly implemented; (b) ensure that the Clinton Global Initiative member has the capital to implement the ideas presented in the Global Case Challenge.

Where is the money coming from?

The Hult family is donating the US$1million.

Who receives the money?

The selected Clinton Global Initiative member(s) will receive the US$1million as a donation with the purpose of implementing the ideas developed by the winning student team(s).

Does the winning team get a prize?

The winning team will be awarded a cup to commemorate their victory.

Who is eligible to compete?

Students past or present from any college or university in the world are invited to form teams of 4-5. There are only two conditions:

1) All participants must have a connection with the same school
2) A maximum of one alumnus who cannot also be a faculty member of the school

How will the competition operate?

Teams must apply to participate in one of the five cities and select the social challenge track they wish to compete in. Hult will accommodate as many teams as possible, since the aim of the Hult GCC is to develop as many innovative implementation solutions to the given social challenge. However, in the event of over-subscription teams will be chosen based on the criteria below.

There will be two rounds of competition:

Regional Competitions – On February 25th 2012 Regional Finals will be held simultaneously at each Hult campus city: Boston, London, Dubai, Shanghai and San Francisco. A local panel of judges will select one winning team from each social challenge track per location.

Global Final Competition – The five regional winners from each social challenge track will be invited to a Global Final in New York City on April 26, 2012. Here they will present their proposals to a panel of international business leaders. One team from each track will be chosen as the Global Winner.

Will the challenge proposed differ between the Regional Finals and Global Final?

No. Teams will continue to expand on the same issue at the Global Finals. Each Regional Winner will be encouraged to utilize the weeks between the Regional Finals and the Global Final to work on their proposed solutions and presentation. The teams may use any resource available to them during this time. The objective is to deliver to the Clinton Global Initiative member organization an implementation solution that is ready to be piloted and scaled as to make a real difference in the world.

How do teams apply?

Student teams interested in participating in the event should visit www.hultglobalcasechallenge.com to fill out the online application. Applying is easy and consists of five easy steps:

1) Select your city of competition
2) Choose the social challenge track that interests you
3) Find 3 to 4 other students from your college or university that share your passion
4) Upload your resumes and statement of purpose into the online application
5) Check back regularly to see if your team has been selected or join Facebook page

Teams selected to compete in the Regional Finals will be responsible for securing their own travel arrangement to and from the event. Training, pre-event mixer, food and drink throughout the day and post-event reception will all be covered.

Can individuals apply?

While only teams may compete, individuals who cannot form a team but are interested in competing can apply. The organizers will do their best to assign the applicant to a team of other individual applicants. However, team applications will be given a priority and there is no guarantee that a team will be found for all individual applicants. Join the Facebook community to find others individuals who are looking to form teams.

Can a team choose which Regional Final to compete in?

Yes, teams are not limited to entering the Regional Final nearest to their school. However, clearly the additional travel and accommodation costs and visa implications must be taken into account.

How will teams be selected for the Regional Finals?

Hult will try to accommodate as many teams as possible, however, in the event of over-subscription of a particular Regional Final location, team selection will be based on a number of application criteria, including: statement of purpose, academic performance, work experience, skills and abilities, career motivation and non-profit work. Relevant case competition experience will also be considered.

Are there a maximum number of teams that can compete from each school?

While technically there is no limit, the aim of the Hult Global Case Challenge is to have as many different organizations from around the globe competing. Therefore, Schools who wish to enter multiple teams are encouraged to apply for as many different social challenge tracks and Regional Finals as possible (e.g., Boston, London, Dubai, Shanghai, San Francisco).

Who will cover travel costs?

Students will be responsible for any travel costs associated with competing in the regional final. Hult will meet the travel and accommodation costs of teams competing in the Global Final.

How much will it cost to compete?

There will be a $100 fee per team. If your team is selected to compete in one of the five regional events, your registration fee would have to be paid to secure your participation.

What if my team cannot afford these costs?

Please contact the organizers. Through corporate sponsorship, some scholarships are available, particularly for teams coming from afar to compete.

What training will the selected teams receive?

All teams will be provided with mandatory training on effective presentation skills. A team of senior management consultants will provide this training. Such training has been deemed necessary because good ideas often fail to gain traction due to poor communication. The whole objective of the Hult Global Case Challenge is to gather and present as many innovative ideas as possible to help the Clinton Global Initiative member meet its Commitment to Change.

Case Study

Faculty from Hult International Business School and the IXL Center, led by Dr. Hitendra Patel, Director of the Innovation Program at Hult and Managing Director of the IXL Center, will work with the CEO and leadership teams of Habitat for Humanity, OneLaptopPerChild, and SolarAid to capture a challenge that each NGO is facing in a case study format.

The case study will take a deep dive into the challenge being tackled and valuable insights to both the industry and the successes and failures of each of the partner NGOs will be documented. More than 50 hours of consulting advisory will also be provided to each partner NGO as the IXL Center will utilize its proprietary framework to identify the key issues being faced and frame a specific challenge, that when solved, can create a tipping point in the market place.

Participants will not be limited to the information available in the case study, and are encouraged to seek out knowledge from any resource available. The published case study is not your “traditional” case study. Instead of concentrating on a historical series of events and outcomes, the Hult GCC case studies capture real-time information and knowledge, and transfers that learning to it’s readership. Since the outcomes of the case studies have not yet occurred, it is critical that participants stay up-to-date on recent developments that may take place in the marketplace between the time the case study is released and the regional competitions.

Given the dynamic nature of the case study, new real-time information will be given on the day of the regional event, while a specific challenge question will be drafted around the case study and distributed to the selected competitors at the same time the case studies are released.
